Welcome to Palazzo Margherita - the fifth and the most luxurious in a collection of hotels owned by film director, Francis Ford Coppola. Located in Bernalda, South Italy, Coppola collaborated with Parisian interior designer, Jacques Grange to fulfil his grand vision. There was also a family collaboration in this project with several close knit family members (including daughter Sofia Coppola) designing some of the bedrooms. Read more about the hotel here.

Well, another week has whizzed by and here we are on a sunny Saturday!

Here is this week's Inspiration Profile and it comes all the way from Los Angeles - please meet the lovely Stephanie Hobbs from Marmol Radziner.

What do you do: I am the Design Associate at Marmol Radziner in Los Angeles and I have been here for 15 years (minus a two year hiatus when I worked at Herriot and Melhuish in Wellington, NZ)

Where do you live: Santa Monica, California

What are you working on: I currently have my hands in a whole bunch of stuff. Here are a few highlights:

A Master Plan for a 150 acre family retreat in upstate New York
Assisting MOCA with the design for an exhibit at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood
Designs for two houses in Kauai
The design for a new family compound in Montecito, California including a main house, guest house, gym and sport court
A new house in Rustic Canyon, California which is about to finish construction, the clients are moving in at the end of the month!
And finally the Marmol Radziner jewellery line.

Vince Store - Melrose, Los Angeles

Who/what inspires me: My insanely creative friends and family inspire me on a daily basis. I also get to work with a whole bunch of creative people. Travelling, colour, clothes and shoes.

I work best: In the morning, not super early and after I’ve had a cup of coffee, and before I get hungry for lunch!

What I do when I’m stuck for inspiration: I surf the web, typically for vintage furniture, I google image search random things or I flip through a magazine. I also like to check out what my facebook friends have been posting.

The best advice I have been given is: Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

My latest discovery is: That the tailor I go to will make throw pillows for $15-$20.

Books that I get inspiration from: 'Born to Run' is my most recent read that really inspired me. When I’m feeling healthy I seem to work better, and this book really inspires you to want to run! Plus it’s a great story.
I also like to have a couple of fun books on my desk at all times, which right now happen to be a Jean Prouve book and Arcadia Cross-Country Style Architecture and Design.

House in Venice

Magazines that inspire me: I read pretty much every fashion magazine out there. At work I love flipping through the auction catalogues. Most of the vintage furniture is so much better than any of the new stuff.

Blogs and Websites that I enjoy: I don’t get on the blogs much but I do like to check out what my friends are posting. Sandwich'd, Create - Ana's blogs about her life and her creations, it's very inspiring; A Little Faith - she gives you little weekend challenges; Go Figure - a great facebook page about nutrition; Domestic Scene - love all the fun projects and of course, Charlotte Minty. (aw shucks, thanks Stephanie - CM)
Plus a few of my favourite web sites - Remodelista - I'm on this everyday; Gilt - love, love, love and The Man Repeller - makes me laugh.

My favourite room at home is: My bedroom, which is basically my closet.

My office is: Hectic and cluttered but fun

What am I looking forward to: One of my best friends is getting married this summer in Michigan and we’re all going to spend a week out there by the lake. Also, my sweetie and I got a weekend of rock climbing classes in Joshua Tree for each other for Christmas and we’ll hopefully do that in Feb or April. Finally, I hope to make it to New Zealand in May for a friend’s 40^th birthday!! Fingers crossed.

Hallways, stairwells and transitions spaces can sometime be forgotten or not treated with much care as the rest of the house. I like the lone chair sitting in these images above - they welcome you to sit down and just be. I'm going through a transition stage at the moment so these spaces really suit my mood.

It's Friday again and, for us folks in Wellington, it is Anniversary weekend which means we have a day off on Monday. Nice. Friday also means this week's Inspiration Profile and today we have the delightful Kara Rosenlund. Enjoy.

Name: Kara Rosenlund

What do you do: I am a props stylist and also a vintage wares retailer. I’ve been involved in the industry first as a photographer some 8 years ago and more recently as a stylist.

Where do you live: Brisbane, Australia

What are you working on: I am always working on my Travelling Wares Caravan Pop Up Shop, this also compliments my interior work for private clients and also magazine and cookbook publications. Right now I am concentrating on launching my online store and props hire.

Who/what inspires me: Anyone who has the self belief, confidence and desire to push their own abilities inspires me. It’s not always easy and there are definitely easier roads to take.

I work best: In the mornings; I am definitely an early morning fowl; not so much a late night owl.

What I do when I’m stuck for inspiration: Generally I get some perspective. Slowing the pace down and getting back to basics and observing. You can learn and be inspired by your own observations so much, it is limitless. I have always been a very observant individual and this has always complimented and assisted my work. I like this approach, as in this day and age it is rare to find a true original sense of inspiration.

The best advice I have been given is: Just do it. This isn’t in the Nike kind of way, just a no nonsense approach.

My latest discovery is: Well, it’s not really a discovery, however I have recently become obsessed with pewter.

Books that I get inspiration from: Ilse Crawford’s book ‘Home is Where the Heart Is’ is a staple; whenever I need clarity I always find this book brings it in bucketloads, both on a personal and professional level.

Magazines that inspire me: World of Interiors, I have always loved. Vogue Living, of course. Monocle, the perfect travel companion.

Blogs that I enjoy: On the home front I really enjoy The Design Files, The Selby, My Vibe My Life by Kelly Wearstler, on the fashion side of things I really like The Coveteur and Garance Dore, on the shopping side of things I really like Father Rabbit's blog, and then on the wedding front (I am getting married this year) I am devouring both Studio Sixty and Nikole Ramsay’s blogs, obsessively, plus Snippet and Ink and 100 Layer Cake.

My favourite room at home is: Our bedroom, it is a true sanctuary away from it all. There is no other purpose to this room except to sleep and relax. No clothes piles, no computer, just beautiful textures and calm colours.

My office is: Unorthodox. An old long heavy worker's bench is my desk, with my ten year reference library archived underneath in piles of books and magazines.

What am I looking forward to: Achieving balance. Home, Life, Work.

A couple of days ago, I stumbled across Marcus Hay's lovely website. Hay is a Creative Director and Stylist, previously from Australia, now based in New York.
His apartment has been featured in the January 2012 issue of Elle Decoration UK as well as some other European magazines. He has made great use of the spaces in his small apartment - it looks homely and interesting with the eclectic mix of furnishings and objects. See more of Hay's work and his blog here.

Welcome to what I hope will become a staple to the pages of this blog. It is an exciting and new feature called Inspiration Profile.
When one works in the creative field, inspiration is so important to our work. I know when my work does not come together as well as it should, it's because I'm not inspired. This may be due to a variety of reasons and it is at these times that I step away from the desk and let myself be inspired by people, places, books, magazines, blogs and other influences.
I decided to ask a range of creative people to find out what gets them inspired. To kick off this new feature is Jeremy Hansen, Editor of HOME New Zealand.

Name: Jeremy Hansen

What do you do: I’m a writer and editor, and I’ve been editing HOME New Zealand magazine for six years.

Where do you live: Auckland, New Zealand

What are you working on: Right now, we’re finalising our February/March issue, which makes art its focus: artists, collectors, and the places they live.

Who/what inspires me: I’m a journalist by training, but I’ve always been inspired by architecture, so I feel lucky to have a job that combines these two things. There’s an inherent optimism about architecture and urban design that I continue to find inspiring – that good, old-fashioned desire to make the world, or at least small parts of it, a better place.

I work best: If I knew the answer to this, I’d be a lot more productive! But I tend to write best when I’m at home, usually late at night.

What I do when I’m stuck for inspiration: Read anything good. I don’t have a TV, but I subscribe to a lot of magazines and buy plenty of books, so there’s always something distracting close at hand.

The best advice I have been given is: The fact that I can’t think of an answer to this question suggests I should listen more closely when advice is being offered.

My latest discovery is: A fascinating new book from Taschen, ‘Project Japan: Metabolism Talks’. Edited by Rem Koolhaas and Hans Ulrich Obrist, it’s a rich collection of interviews, photographs and opinion relating to the Metabolism movement in Japanese architecture. I’ve always been intrigued by the otherworldliness of the Metabolists’ creations, and this book is helping me understand where the movement came from and why it petered out.

Books that I get inspiration from: Lately, American writer and photographer Leslie Williamson’s ‘Handcrafted Modern’, a beautiful photographic tour of the homes and studios of mid-century modernist architects, designers and craftspeople. All of the buildings in the book are wonderfully warm and humane.

The pages of HOME New Zealand have recently undergone a re-design.

Magazines that inspire me: I like 'New York' magazine for its smart pop-culture liveliness. The high-wire inventiveness of the homes featured in Japan’s ‘Casa Brutus’ is always inspiring. I’m always happy when my copy of ‘Architectural Record’ arrives in the mailbox – it consistently features a range of the world’s most exciting projects. I like ‘Dwell’ a lot, too, for its promotion of accessible prefab architecture and its determination to inspire its readers to build in a more environmentally sensitive way. Italy’s ‘Case da Abitare’ is always immaculately put together. I’m watching Margaret Russell’s transformation of ‘Architectural Digest’ with interest – she appears to be rapidly modernising it, moving it away from its décor-and-drapes fustiness towards a cleaner approach, with a greater emphasis on architectural content. And I always enjoy the energy and eclecticism of Australia’s ‘Vogue Living’.

Blogs that I enjoy: I read very few, I have to confess. For me, print is still king. But I like Decor Extremus , in which Douglas Lloyd Jenkins and Peter Wells muse on their very particular approaches to interiors at their villa in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. The great New Zealand potter Bruce Martin has a very thoughtful and inspiring blog, Kamaka Pottery. And at risk of sounding tragic, I regularly keep tabs on what Michelle Obama is wearing on Mrs O.

My favourite room at home is: I live in a 1915 apartment building in central Auckland, and I especially like sitting at our dining table. The table is a mid-century piece I inherited from my grandmother, and from it I can look across our balcony, with its elegant, dark-green wrought-iron railings, to the plane trees across the street. It’s a breezy, restful space that hovers three floors above the life of the street outside.

My office is: A little bit embarrassing – we’re part of a large magazine company, and our office has that anonymous 1990s corporate feel, with primary colour panels that are meant to make us feel cheerful. Plus, my desk is a shambles.

What am I looking forward to: Next month I go on the road with Canadian architect Brian MacKay-Lyons and New Zealand architect Michael O’Sullivan to judge HOME New Zealand’s annual Home of the Year award. We visit homes all over the country in search of our winner. Being out of the office visiting great works of New Zealand architecture with two people who know much more about the subject than I do mean it’s always the best week of the year.

A Simple Designer Bakery in Japan

I'm enjoying this minimal and beautifully designed bakery in Kyoto, Japan. Named Panscape, the bakery was designed by ninkipen! and uses a lovely range of materials. The counter is made of 10mm thick aluminium, the front display cabinet rests on a large roughly cut log and touches of gold are noted with the front step lettering and reflective panel on the wall beside the front cabinet. Just stunning.

Al Brown's Depot

Al Brown at Depot, Auckland

This is Depot - found on Federal Street, Auckland and it has been getting a lot of good buzz, which is no surprise as it has the clever Al Brown at its helm. The interiors, designed by Charlie Notts, are rustic and easy going (rather like Brown himself). I'm enjoying the open relationship between the service and eating areas as well as the overall industrial vibe.

A Cool Store for Men

Save Khaki United at 254 Broome, New Yrok City.

This is a men's store called Save Khaki United (SKU) and is one of three stores located in New York City. SKU makes men's clothes and accessories and follows the motto "modern fit, timeless quality". I like how this store is presented - very relaxed and with no pretensions. The displays are simple and effective - using butcher hooks, nails and chunky timber. I can imagine my male friends being happy to shop here.

Stylish Aspen Holiday Home

It was over 5 years ago when I visited Aspen for my skiing holiday - how long ago that seems. While I was there, I got a little insight to how the wealthy lived from the rows of private planes on the airport runway to the large houses surrounding the Aspen township. I was even taken out for dinner by a billionaire client of my ski pro friend. It was very entertaining!
Here is the stunning Aspen holiday home of Aerin Lauder, beauty entrepreneur and granddaughter of Estee Lauder, featured in the latest Vogue. The place is modern and very stylish. No 'chalet' or 'winter ski lodge' cliches here - okay, maybe the deer head over the fireplace, however the rest of it is very classy. Read the article and see more photographs here.

Christchurch Rumbles Again.

Christchurch was dealt another blow yesterday - several serious aftershocks shuddered through the city, causing more damage and undoing the hard work that Cantabrians have been doing over the last six months. The psychological damage would be enough to defeat most people and at a time when they should be relaxing with family and friends.

My family and I all have lovely homes and to know that Christchurch are dealing with uncertainty, damage, breakages and liquidifcation - it is at once humbling and heartbreaking.

I have overseas colleagues and friends expressing their concern and dismay at the latest event.

Christchurch - our heartfelt thoughts are with you and I hope in this difficult time, some calmness and brights stars come through for you.

It is Friday and only two days away from Christmas. It has been a lovely week - relatives arriving in town, friends are getting engaged (congrats Sarah and Richard!), the sun has been shining and everyone is starting to relax while looking forward to the up-coming holiday break.
It is great to conclude a year, which has been difficult for so many, and to look forward to a fresh start next year. I only hope that you are all with loved ones on Christmas day and to take the chance to cherish the good things in life. Merry Christmas all.

Glossy Black Doors

I had my last client meeting for 2011 yesterday morning! My work load is easing off and there are only small jobs left to do before Christmas.
My lovely client has recently had her house re-painted and yesterday morning, I was admiring the fantastic glossy black front door when I arrived. When I entered the house and looked back, it was white on the inside - just like all the interior doors. I made a suggestion to my client to paint the inside of the door in glossy black as well - the door has great character details and it would look more grand. It would also distinguish the main exterior door from all the other doors. She loved the idea.
I know many people don't mind having different colours on either side of the doors but I am all for same colour on both sides...always! How about you?

Simple Italian Holiday Home Surrounded by Olive Trees

It is one week to Christmas and as we wrap up our working year, I sense that everyone is just knackered and looking forward to their much needed break. I am too!
Here is a peaceful and simple holiday home in southern Puglia, Italy that just begs one to relax and take their time. Belonging to Bolognese architect, Mario Constanzi and his wife Francesca, this former farm building is surrounded by stunning mature olive trees. Nice.

Bright, Fun and Stripes

I noticed this great living room from Design Sponge a couple of days ago - pretty much anything that has stripes, like these cushions and rug, will always catch my eye! Then I was taken by the wayside to something else.

The Lovely Work of Kara Rosenlund

I have started up a 'small practice' group with two other interior designers, which I think is great! I was always jealous of my father's and my sister's small practice architecture groups that they belong to. When you work on your own, having a support group to talk to is just so lovely and there is just so many issues to keep on top of.
Another thing that you can share is your sources of inspirations and Kerryn (from my cool new 'small practice' group) told me about Kara Rosenlund. Rosenlund is based in Brisbane and is a talented stylist, buyer and vintage wares retailer. You can check out her website and blog here. New at Minty & Co - Preloved and Reborn Drawers

Today I am loving the latest additions to the Minty & Co store - these two sets of preloved and reborn drawers.
The large drawers were worse for wear when I found them and they needed some serious TLC. After the restoration, they were refinished in a great donkey brown. These useful drawers would look great in a bedroom or as sideboard for a living/dining area. Take your pick.
Meanwhile the smaller drawers with the cute retro legs have been smarten up in a sophisicated grey to suit any bedroom and any age.
I have used classic satin chrome flat round pulls on both sets of drawers to stylishly finish them off. What do you think?

Castle, founded by Rachel Castle, is well known for her crisp bed linen and one-off colourful artwork, has collaborated with well known Australian fashion house, Gorman to create a limited edition fashion range which includes pillowcases, towels and clothing. Nothing beats a jolt of colour and pattern to get anyone out of a funk.

This is Taiwan Noodle House restaurant found in Beijing, China. This eating place has used a great combination of light coloured Wishbone chairs, simple tables and benches, Tom Dixon lights and the stunning blue and white chinese china installation on the main wall - it is so effective! Designed by Golucci International Design.

Here is a fabulous new chair that my client chose and ordered from the amazing archives by ES Design (they have a great selection of vintage chairs to choose from, which they can restore and re-upholstered). After we chose a fabric that was no longer available (ah yes, that sometimes happens!), my client decided on this fantastically graphic yellow fabric. The chair has come up beautifully and if you go to the ES Design blog here, you can see the transformation from before to after.

There are some impressive window displays happening all over the world. Christmas is a time where window dressing really steps up a notch and these ones from Bergdorf Goodman, New York are no exception. Based around the theme 'Carnival of the Animals', some of these windows have been wrought entirely in different materials, like paper, brass, tassels, fringe and beading. Just amazing work.

A home as well as headquarters for a public relations firm and a psychiatric practice, these interiors are airy and serene. All has been going well with Minty & Co! We are almost a month old and it started with a bang. Thanks for the great welcome and I have been enjoying meeting my Minty & Co customers over the last few weeks via emails, Facebook and Twitter.
Coming up over the next few weeks is a new group of pre-loved and re-born furniture as well as some gorgeous white candleholders from Sweden.
I really like our 'His' and 'Hers' pillowcases that we have at Minty & Co. They are a great wedding gift or a present for the couple that has everything (all ages!). These cotton pillowcases are 300 count thread - so they're great quality and finish off a nice crisp white bed.

I was out with friends for dinner last night and one has asked for my help with her apartment. She mentioned that she would be re-painting the walls - which are at present white. She suggested doing something different, maybe adding a colour. We talked about the possibility of greys, which is a nice step up from white. Here are some lovely scenes styled by Hilary Robertson (as spotted on Emma's Design Blog) that has soft light grey on the walls. Looks gorgeous.

The Kitchen - Before. This was a former showroom kitchen.

The previous kitchen did not allow direct access from the front door.

The Kitchen - After.

We used bamboo flooring and Corian on the island benchtop.

The kitchen tap with presence!

An upstand on the island creates division and a place for the powerpoints at each end.

The tiled splashback inserted with an art glass tile on the left.

Brushed stainless steel benchtop to match the freestanding oven.

Bamboo was continued on the island as the surround for the shelving at the end.

Double rangehood hidden in the cupboards above for the extra wide hob.

We kept the client's chemistry collection from the previous kitchen and amped it up with some interesting lighting.

The lights slowly change colour - a disco in the kitchen!

Here is a kitchen that I designed and managed last year. I re-visited a few weeks ago and took some photos - I enjoyed seeing it again and to be reminded of the great transformation!
What I liked about this job was while the clients had some typical kitchen design requests like more storage, better flow, new bigger and better oven (had to come from Italy!), lots of drawers; there were other more interesting requests - they had commissioned an art tile for the splashback, they had a chemistry collection (signage, bottles) to display, they were keen on interesting lighting, they had a small scale art glass collection to display as well as a request for certain materials like bamboo flooring. I enjoyed working on this job and liked the surprises that my client handed me to work with.

Resene Habitat Magazine - Summer 2011/12.

This weekend I received the latest Habitat magazine from Resene in my mailbox. And in this issue, there was a section that I worked on several months ago. It is called Alternative Solutions (I'm on page 22 & 23), where they ask two designers to re-create a chosen room from a house that is featured in the magazine, using Resene colours and products that are available to the New Zealand market. The chosen room was a bedroom so I proposed a modern Scandi inspired room and recommended several products from Father Rabbit, Country Road, Thonet, Simon James Design, Etsy and ECC. The finished result is the above - all pulled together by a computer! What do you think?

Spotted on Remodelista - these stylish round leather campaign-style mirrors designed by French architect Jacques Adnet (1900-1984). Available from Gubi, the Adnet mirror is beautifully constructed with leather straps and brass details. What also makes the mirror unique is the strap that holds the mirror is in direct proportion to the dimension of the mirror. Stunning. Jeremey Hansen, the editor from Home NZ magazine, wrote this holiday home feature for the June issue of Dwell magazine this year. It features the Paraparaumu Beach bach belonging to Architect Gerald Parsonson and his family. While the house is modern, it has been intentionally kept simple and humble, giving a sense of ease and relaxed living as a holiday home should be. The bach's surrounding landscape is left untouched as to enjoy the surrounding dune-lands and views of Kapiti Island. Recently Dwell magazine (USA) profiled some New Zealand holiday homes and the images above is of one that was published in July/August of this year. Designed and inhabitated by architect, Amanda Yates, this home was built for her parents and the following generations. Set in the stunning location of Maramaratotara Bay, this home embraces the landscape and lets it dictate the architectural language. This elegant stool made of solid ash would be so handy not only as seating but also as a side table for a sofa or bed. I have admired the rugs from Loom, Australia from afar for some time - thay have a great range of rugs with unique colours and patterns. The Loom rugs break away from the traditional rug mould by using clever techniques like overdying vintage rugs in intense modern colours and using recycled yarn ('Old Yarn') that have been unravelled from vintage kilims and handwoven into new rugs. The old yarn brings to the new rug the softness of colour and tone that only comes with age. Lovely.

I have always loved using trays to contain vignettes and collections of objects on tables. I have one on my coffee table and a few in my bedroom. It's a great and easy way to 'frame' and pull together a disparate range of objects. LA design company, Burnham Design has some great examples of this display technique in their portfoilo as well as their design office (as seen above). I especially love the croc skin tray with the red, blue and white objects.

I think these painted timber candleholders from Ferm Living are rather fab. This design was inspired by the film "Lady and the Tramp", where in one famous scene there is a candlelit dinner at Tony's and on the table there is a wine bottle with a candle in it. As noted from Emma's blog, here are some catalogue photos from Swedish furniture company, Norrgavel (North End) which were taken at remote farmhouse in Jamtland, Sweden. Norrgavel are known for their sustainable and classic furniture.
They have used the calm and stripped back aesthetic of this farmhouse to their full advantage as they display their wares for their Autumn brochure. Cosy.

The Versatile Tio Chair by Goldsworthy

I was reminded about the versatile Tio Chair by a client today as a suggestion for her home. Designed by Nathan Goldsworthy, this chair was launched in 2006 and won the NZ Best Award for Sustainable Design.
"Due to its ability to change, the Tio chair can remain contemporary and adapt to new environments" It is easy to change the covers of the Tio chair to suit any environment or style with only 1.3m of fabric required to do so. The chair also has generous dimensions which allows for comfortable lounge seating.

I received an email from Nathan Goldsworthy - who let me know that the Tio chair is now available in Oak (the above chair images are in pine), which is more robust and has a different look, ie. looks even better!

White Kitchen with a Dash of Black

I have been away in Auckland to check out the New Zealand Gift Fair over the last few days which is why my blog has been quiet.
Back in the office - I have a new kitchen installation coming up in early October so I am in process of getting in touch with contractors and getting everything ready with the joiners. This kitchen was designed earlier this year so it will be exciting to see it come together in the flesh.
I found this Californian kitchen on Remodelista - it is from a cottage in Napa Valley and the kitchen is very similar to the asethetic of the kitchen that we are working on. It is going to be a white kitchen with panelled doors/drawers and we have a black stone bench top as well as black hardware to complete the look. I am project managing this job so will let you know about its progress. Watch this space.

Knight Floor Light by David Moreland

Knight Floor light by David Moreland. Available in black, white and green.

I'm really liking this Knight Floor Light by New Zealand designer, David Moreland. I saw it on display at Backhouse and what is effective about this design is that the base can go under the sofa if you want the light closer for reading. Great - no bulky bases! I have proposed this light for a job of mine where there are some tight corners besides the seating areas. Knight Floor Lights are made out of a mild steel tube base and spun aluminium shade - and the white looks rather fab.
